Indigenous women share why they left alcohol-fuelled towns for remote community (Interview)
A cluster of dilapidated houses in the Gibson Desert is providing Martu people with respite from what they see as the trap of town life. Five of the 17 houses at Kunawarritji on the Canning Stock Route are effectively condemned – deemed beyond economic repair – and none is in working order. Nevertheless, 76 people live at Kunawarritji and many more want to move there or return. Residents prefer it to life in the iron ore town of Newman, 1500km away by road, where they say relatives are drinking non-stop and children are not safe.
