Protyre Formula Renault (Barc Renault) from Silverstone national circuit, Race 2, 29th September 2013, Fortec Motorsport Tatuus with Wei Fung Thong Driving. Wei Fung (Shaun is the name he used commonly with us) was in his first year with us, rapidly progressing throughout the year and taking pole position here in September. A very eventful race for him, a lot going on, even after the chequered flag, as the something shorted out and the wiring got a bit hot (as did he) meaning we had to repair it all for later in the day. We used to run so low here as it was still very smooth, could constantly smell the wooden skid burning against the tarmac, that he didn't think anything of the fact that his legs were getting hotter over the last few laps, putting it down to plank friction. Showed why he got pole with his pace in between any shenanigans The Hong Kong Chinese driver (as was his team-mate Hongwei Cao) adapted very quickly to UK racing and went on to compete in top level sportscars soon after this season. A really nice kid, he learnt quickly and was being helped by Marchy Lee who he shared some GT drives with later in his career. This championship was for the older Tatuus chassis formula Renault's as the newer ones were being used in Europe and UK championships (like NEC Renault and Eurocup videos I also have on this channel), still plenty of life in these cars even then. Carbon chassis, pretty reliable Renault engine and sequential gearbox. They had decent grip and aerodynamics and were good little cars to race as they weren't so wide that you couldn't overtake at all. A reasonably well supported grid of around 20 cars each time meant for some close battling, and they aren't so over the top with aero that you couldn't follow quite closely.
