Big Books and Little Books - Grade R
Mrs Ada Brown from Littlewood Primary School teaches a Grade R lesson on big books and little books. The lesson starts off with Mrs Brown showing the children a big book and asking them what they see on the cover of the book. She teaches them the correct way of turning the pages and does a picture walk from the first page to the end of the story. The objective of the lesson is to teach a story language in a different format and the concept of using print which includes showing the children the cover and the spine of the book. The value of the big book is to bring out the language of the story and the vocabulary and for the children to listen to the sounds and try to recognize the sound in the words and also for them to see how words and sentences are written. In the second part of the lesson the children are introduced to little books which are exactly the same as the big books but they have no print. The children use the little books to practice the concept of print. ( UKU109 )
