Spektakuläre Gratwanderung auf fast 3.000 Meter Höhe am Aletschgletscher

Today we're hiking the UNESCO High Trail in the Aletsch Arena in Valais, Switzerland. The hike leads from Bettmerhorn along the steep ridge to the Eggishorn and offers breathtaking views of the largest glacier in the Alps. *Advertisement ▶ Find the route to follow in our HOME of TRAVEL App! Learn more here: https://linkly.link/2kQle Our journey begins in the car-free village of Bettmeralp. We walk the short 300 meters to our hotel, settle into our cozy room, and immediately enjoy the first breathtaking views. Then the real adventure begins. We take the cable car up to the Bettmerhorn. There, the UNESCO High Trail begins, leading over to the Eggishorn. Down below, there were still green alpine meadows; up here, we are greeted by a rugged, high-alpine mountain landscape. The trail climbs steeply from the start through scree, over stone steps and constructed boardwalks. A bit of sure-footedness and a head for heights are definitely required. After a short time, we catch our first glimpse of the imposing Aletsch Glacier before reaching the summit cross on the Bettmerhorn. From the Bettmerhorn, the gigantic extent of the 20-kilometer-long glacier becomes visible. The formation of the mountain landscape is also fascinating. During the last Ice Age, around 18,000 years ago, the ice lay so high that only the outermost peaks protruded, smoothing the surrounding mountains. We continue over the boulders, navigating with the ease of an ibex. You have to stay focused the whole time, but with good tread on your boots, balancing is actually quite fun. Some sections with metal pegs in the rock face are reminiscent of a via ferrata, but you don't need a via ferrata kit here. The masses of ice below us are immense. At its thickest point, the ice is 800 meters deep. If the glacier were to melt completely, it could supply the entire world population with one liter of water per day for three and a half years. Nevertheless, it is currently shrinking by about 50 meters per year. Finally, we reach the Eggishorn at almost 3,000 meters. The view from up here is fantastic. We look out over the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, the Aletschhorn, Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and the Dom. After all these impressions, our stomachs start to rumble. For our lunch break, we're trying a regional specialty called Cholera. This dish dates back to the cholera epidemic of around 1830, when people had to cook in isolation using supplies from their cellars. This traditional dish is made with potatoes, apples, leeks, onions, and cheese. To finish, we'll have a delicious cream slice. If you've now got a hankering for Switzerland, be sure to subscribe to our channel. We're continuing our tour and next time we'll take you even closer to the four-thousand-meter peaks. We'd really appreciate a thumbs up!
