finding the right mechanism (music journal #19)

This week I kept working on the internal mechanism of the Yantra Clock. My first attempts were based on the 139 recordings of the note E I made last week, but they didn't work. A continuous drone created atmosphere, but not movement. Then I tried isolated sounds, but they still lacked the feeling of energy flowing through a mechanism. So I changed direction completely. Instead of forcing the samples to do something they weren't meant to do, I recorded a drum solo and decided to use it as the energetic foundation of the mechanism. My next step will be to "melodize" that performance by assigning the different recordings of E to the drum pattern, in a process similar to the one Frank Zappa used with Terry Bozzio for The Black Page. Sometimes the solution isn't improving an idea. It's finding a different language.
