Alta Via 1 | Dolomites | #3 Rifugio Fanes – Rifugio Lagazuoi | Italian Alps

This is my third day on Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites, Italy, from Rifugio Fanes to Rifugio Lagazuoi. Leaving Rifugio Fanes in the early morning and gently climbing up through green pastures among cows. Soon, the rain started, I walked as quickly as I could to the pass, Forcella del Lech, with rain gear on. As I climbed on rugged rocky terrain, the rumbling of thunder began! I took shelter under the rock for a while and then continued ascending to the high pass in rolling thunder. Descending the pass on an incredibly steep gully with countless series of switchbacks was definitely one of the highlights of Alta Via 1! The sun came out when I reached the lake at the bottom. The surrounding landscape was very dramatic. Another long switchback to climb up to Rifugio Lagazuoi! Rifugio Lagazuoi perches on the edge of the cliff.
