Confused about their own record
In Senate Estimates, officials detailed the government’s massive housing commitments, billions in bond loans, long-term payment contracts, and contingency caps. Yet when pressed on results, the numbers told a very different story. The Housing Australia Future Fund now holds $11.4 billion to build a tiny amount of homes while acquiring pre-existing homes to make up for their building shortfall. A heated exchange followed after claims that 5,000 homes had been delivered, a figure referring to all Commonwealth programs combined, not just the Future Fund. Big announcements. Bigger dollar figures. But Australians don’t live in press releases, they live in houses.
