David McMillan: Only Westerner to Escape the Bangkok Hilton - Danny Dyer
Actor Danny Dyer moves in with international drug smuggler David McMillan to uncover how he survived, escaped the Bangkok Hilton, and ran multi-million pound operations. On the streets of Soho, Danny meets the unassuming mastermind who says he treated smuggling like problem-solving. McMillan recalls hiding hash in a radio as a teen before building routes across Asia, Europe and Australia, traveling on as many as 30 passports and mixing with cartels, warlords and mafia groups. A London cabbie’s hostage tale underscores how quickly low-level deals turn violent. The price was brutal. Arrested across the world, McMillan served 19 years in prisons in five countries. In Thailand’s Klong Prem Central Prison, the Bangkok Hilton, he describes naked intake searches, 15-hour lock-ins and a death penalty by bench-mounted machine gun after 30 lashes with barbed wire. Facing execution, he smuggled in a hacksaw blade and built a ladder from picture frames, bamboo and tape to escape a compound ringed by multiple walls, a moat and electrified wire. At sea off Brighton, Danny joins McMillan on a yacht to learn why boats carried the most valuable loads. McMillan explains hiding 16 kg of cocaine inside a gas canister and why a bribable coast guard can be less terrifying than a Force 10. He also outlines air couriers, with some recklessly carrying up to 11 kg - and why first-time mules so often pay the highest price. The violence behind the trade surfaces too: rivals who “disappear,” and the personal toll of McMillan’s wife dying in an Australian women’s prison fire during a major heroin case that earned him a 17-year sentence. Later, after an acquittal in Pakistan and a final two-year stint for half a kilo from Heathrow, McMillan says he is retired. Back in England, Danny meets Jeanette, the partner McMillan credits with keeping him straight. Over dinner, family life softens the portrait, but the question lingers: can a man who lived in the shadows for decades truly walk away? This documentary examines, not endorses, criminal activity. #DannyDyer #DavidMcMillan #BangkokHilton #DrugSmuggling #DeadliestMen #TrueCrime #Documentary
