Best Kuala Lumpur SAMBAL Street FOOD Tour, Part 1 I Roti Canai, Mee Goreng Mamak, DURIAN Chendol

After an exciting exploration of George Town, Penang, our food adventure continued in Kuala Lumpur. We booked a tour with A Chef’s Tour, known for curating immersive culinary experiences. Our guide for the evening was Kiran, whose energy and enthusiasm set the tone for the tour. The experience was aptly named the "Sambal Food Tour," as we were about to dive into a world filled with the flavours of sambal. This episode captures the first half of our journey, with the rest to follow in the next episode. We began at the bustling Chow Kit Market, one of Kuala Lumpur's most vibrant and diverse markets. It's a place where locals shop for fresh produce, seafood, and meats, reflecting the city's multicultural culinary landscape. We first visited the fruit section to sample some of Malaysia's most delicious and exotic fruits. We tasted rose apple, longan, snake fruit, mandarin oranges, and pulasan, each offering a unique flavor and texture. Moving on to the wet market, we explored the preferred ingredients in Malaysian cuisine. We learned about the prized items such as mud creepers, fresh prawns, and chicken, which play a central role in many local dishes. Our next stop was the Guru Nanak Darbar Tatt Khalsa Diwan Gurdwara. Despite the heavy rain, we continued our journey, paying our respects at this serene place of worship and learning about its rich history. We were warmly welcomed with a cup of chai, a perfect comfort in the rainy weather. Undeterred by the downpour, we made our way to Anj Najas Maju, a popular Mamak stall. Mamak stalls, known for their unique Indian Muslim cuisine, are a staple in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore. Here, we had the chance to try our hands at making roti canai, a flaky and delicious flatbread. Though Anubhav gave it his best shot, the skill and technique required for roti canai making clearly demonstrated the expertise of the local chefs. We also savored Mee Goreng Mamak, a dish bursting with bold flavors and textures, making it a highlight of the evening. Our last stop for this episode was Maman's Place, where we indulged in some local sweet treats. We tried cendol, a refreshing dessert made with shaved ice, coconut milk, and green rice flour jelly, and durian, often called the "king of fruits." Known for its distinct aroma and creamy texture, durian is a fruit that divides opinions. However, Anubhav seemed to get accustomed to its unique flavor.
