My 72nd of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains was Mount Tsurugi. Mount Tsurugi was the last blank spot on the map of Japan. I had also seen the movie "Ten no Ki" (The Record of the Survey). The route from Kenzawa has "Kani no Tatebai" (Crab's Vertical Climb) and "Kani no Yokobai" (Crab's Horizontal Climb), which seemed too difficult for someone with a fear of heights. So, I had been thinking about challenging myself via the physically demanding "Hayatsuki Ridge," and finally decided to do it this summer. The "Hayatsuki Ridge" is said to be one of the three steepest climbs in the Northern Alps. I was prepared for it, but it was brutal... I had climbed the Kassen Ridge of Mount Tsubakuro, another of the three steepest climbs in the Northern Alps, without difficulty, and I had often been told, "If you've climbed so many of the 100 Famous Mountains, you can do it," so I thought I could do it too. At the beginning, there were some flat sections, and I thought it would be an easy climb, but from around 1,100m altitude to Hayatsuki Hut at 2,200m altitude, it was a relentless, steep climb, steep climb, and more steep climb. The trail was so tough that I almost gave up on my first day's summit attempt... After reaching the hut, I remembered my failure on Shiomi-dake and decided to climb while the weather was still good, heading for the summit. However, even from here, a challenging trail awaited me. It was a continuous series of steep climbs plus rocky sections unlike anything I'd ever seen before. Everywhere I looked, there were sheer cliffs. The trail was so steep that it made my neck ache from looking up... Even after all that climbing, my legs cramped twice. 😅 According to YAMAP's course time, it should take about 2 hours and 50 minutes from the hut to the summit, but I managed to reach the top in 3 hours and 40 minutes. Once I reached the top, it was covered in the summer mountain mist, so the view from the summit wasn't great, but I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment. There are several dangerous sections on the Hayatsuki Ridge as well. The famous "Crab Claws" section isn't as scary as it sounds, but there's one short but dangerously narrow ridge where a fall would be disastrous, and the scree slopes on the descent are quite frightening, and there are several of them, so it was mentally exhausting.
