The Social Insurance Fund (FUS) received PLN 101.7 billion in contributions in the first quarter of this year. This is 9.1% more than a year earlier. Despite slightly slower economic growth, the FUS's financial situation remains stable. At the end of March 2026, 16.3 million people were registered for retirement and disability insurance. This is 21,600 more than a year earlier. The increase in the number of insured persons and rising wages translated into higher contribution revenues. In the first quarter of this year, social insurance contributions amounted to PLN 101.7 billion. This is 9.1% more than during the same period last year. "The stable number of insured persons and rising wages have a positive impact on the Social Insurance Fund's revenues. As a result, contribution revenues remain at a good level and allow us to finance the growing expenditure on benefits," says Paweł Jaroszek, Member of the Management Board of ZUS. Pensions and disability benefits for over 8 million people In the first three months of the year, PLN 105.6 billion was allocated to pensions and disability benefits from the Social Insurance Institution (FUS). This represents nearly 88% of the fund's total expenditure. Compared to the first quarter of 2025, this represents an 8.9% increase. "In March, the average monthly pension and disability benefit amounted to PLN 4,381. The benefit was 7.5% higher than a year earlier. The number of pensioners and disability pensioners increased to 8.055 million people," according to Beata Kopczyńska, regional spokesperson for the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) in the Silesian Voivodeship. Over 1.3 million foreigners in the system Foreigners are an increasingly important group of policyholders. At the end of March, their number reached 1.305 million. This represents 8% of all ZUS policyholders. Citizens of Ukraine and Belarus constitute the largest group. The persistently high number of people covered by social insurance, including legally working foreigners, has a positive impact on the condition of the Social Insurance Fund. This is an important element of the stability of the entire system. The Fund remains efficient. The coverage ratio of expenditures with contributions and their derivatives reached 81.5% in the first quarter of 2026. This means that the Fund finances the vast majority of its expenditures from its own revenues.
