However, politically, the island is under more pressure than it has been in a long time. For the People's Republic of China, Taiwan is part of its own territory. It leaves no doubt that the island is to be annexed sooner or later, by force if necessary. If Taiwan were to declare independence, this would be a cause for war. The USA has been a close partner of Taiwan for decades, but whether it would provide military assistance in a crisis is uncertain. American presidents have expressed differing opinions on this matter. This uncertainty is causing insecurity in Taiwan. On location, presenter Sebastian Ramspeck speaks with high-ranking decision-makers such as Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-chung and Lin Fei-fan of the National Security Council. They explain how Taiwan is attempting to defend itself against a militarily superior power. Thanks to civilian resilience and asymmetric warfare, an attack by China is intended to be as costly as possible. A war over Taiwan would trigger global economic disruption. After all, the country produces the majority of the chips used in virtually all electronic devices – from mobile phones to fighter jets.
