Sever Franțiu stands out among 20th-century Romanian artists as a creator of spaces, both real and imaginary. He graduated from the "Ion Andreescu" Institute of Arts in Cluj in 1955, and his outstanding teachers were Aurel Ciupe and Catul Bogdan. After completing his studies, he began an important career in the field of scenography. He creates sets and spaces for theaters, both in Arad and the wider area of ​​Transylvania, as well as in Bucharest and, later, even abroad. This is his contribution to the scenic space. In the same area of ​​real spaces, we have an important contribution in the field of monumental arts. Perhaps his most remarkable creation in this field is the creation of the stained glass windows at the Administrative Palace in Arad. If we refer, however, to imaginary spaces, these make their way onto the canvases created by Sever Frențiu as a painter. We are talking about an approach to painting that does not render existing spaces, but constructs them, so that his approach and philosophy about art have major influences from the area of ​​surrealism. His characters are most often in search, in exploration, in solitude, in meditation, sometimes states that can even lead to anguish, but they are surrounded by elements full of meaning, full of symbols, and part of the deciphering of these elements remains to the understanding, to the skill, to the imagination of the relevant viewer. Frențiu has a predilection for the game of meanings, and in this work he displays a wealth of signs, of meanings. We see diurnal birds that share the same sky with a nocturnal animal, the bat. We see here the silhouette of a hunter, but who also has an axe in his hand heading towards two trees. So tension is already created between the axe and the trees, between the birds of the day and the animals of the night. A tension that requires resolution in the viewer's mind! Frențiu's works often open up these mental challenges, these challenges to participate with the imagination, in a better construction of meaning. A good part of his creation also focuses on portraiture, on understanding people's features. And here we have some North African faces, probably inspired by his travels. For his contributions to the arts, Sever Franțiu received the Cultural Merit Decoration, class IV, during the communist period, and in the post-communist period he enjoys, in posterity, the unveiling of a monument dedicated to him in 2022. We are talking about a public monument, a statue in Arad that influences him, thus preserving his memory for future generations. It would be worth noting, in terms of his tendency to work with ciphered elements, perhaps his contribution to the development of Freemasonry after the 1990s. He actively contributes to the reopening of Freemasonry and even holds, for a few years, the position of Grand Master of the National Grand Lodge of Romania. His spaces built in painting are, of course, influenced by his extensive experience in the field of theater. So we will often have characters wearing Renaissance-inspired costumes or floors inspired by Italian palaces.
