Viorel Mărginean | Un artist esențial pentru colecționarii de artă I Licitație Contemporană Artmark

The Artmark Postwar and Contemporary Art Auction on July 14 offers the public an excursion through almost seven decades of Romanian art, bringing together artists who have permanently redefined the language of painting. CULT Report (Euronews) Guest: Simona Chiș - Art Advisor Artmark Reporter: Alida Mocanu From the great established names, such as Corneliu Baba and Ștefan Câlția, to artists who have brought Romanian art to the international stage, such as Adrian Ghenie, Mircea Suciu, Marius Bercea or Hortensia Mi Kafchin, this selection speaks of the way in which each generation has reinvented its own way of looking at the world. In this context, Viorel Mărginean occupies a special place. From the perspective of the art market, Viorel Mărginean is one of the artists who has contributed decisively to the maturation of Romanian collecting. Since the first major auctions held in Romania, his works have enjoyed constant demand and have demonstrated that contemporary painting can have a solid market value, built over time. Today, his works can be found in important private and museum collections, and his name is considered one of the landmarks of modern Romanian art. The work presented in this auction, “Evening”, made in 1990, captures very well the artistic maturity of Viorel Mărginean. The artist almost completely abandons the description of the landscape and reduces the image to a few horizontal registers of color, over which the flight of a colony of birds unfolds. Grays, turquoises and violets build the calm atmosphere of twilight, and the rhythm of the flight introduces a poetic and contemplative dimension. It is a work in which the figurative approaches lyrical abstraction, demonstrating the artist’s chromatic refinement and synthetic strength. Born in 1933, in the village of Cenade in Alba County, he is one of the great painters of Transylvania and one of those who demonstrated that modernity does not mean giving up on tradition, but rather its reinterpretation. Trained in Cluj and then at the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest, Mărginean built an unmistakable artistic language, inspired by the landscape, architecture and spirituality of the Romanian village. Art critics have always noted that his paintings do not just describe places, but create an inner geography. Hills, fields, churches, trees or birds become symbols of memory and time, and color is used not only to represent nature, but to convey emotion. It is precisely this ability to transform the landscape into a poetic experience that makes him one of the most important representatives of Romanian painting in the second half of the 20th century. The year 1990 is no coincidence. It is the year in which Romania entered a new stage in its history, and this image of birds in flight can also be seen as a discreet metaphor of freedom and the passage to another horizon. It is precisely this openness to interpretation that makes Viorel Mărginean's painting remain relevant today. The Postwar and Contemporary Art Auction is, in fact, built precisely around this idea of continuous transformation of Romanian art. If Viorel Mărginean speaks of memory and landscape through chromatic harmonies of great subtlety, Corneliu Baba explores the depth of the human condition, Ștefan Câlția creates a unique symbolic universe, and the artists of the Cluj School – Adrian Ghenie, Mircea Suciu, Marius Bercea or Hortensia Mi Kafchin – propose a painting connected to the great themes of international contemporary art. Together, these names tell the story of the evolution of Romanian painting in recent decades and offer collectors the chance to discover a dialogue between generations, styles and artistic visions. Viorel Mărginean remains one of the essential links in this dialogue. An artist who demonstrated that you can be profoundly contemporary without losing touch with your cultural roots and who continues to be one of the most appreciated Romanian painters by both art historians and collectors.
