In this apologetic study, we will analyze the doctrine of the papacy in light of Scripture, Church history, linguistic analysis, and the testimony of the Church Fathers. In this study, we will examine: • What the Catechism of the Catholic Church (§880–882 and §892) teaches about the pope? • The declarations of the First Vatican Council (Pastor Aeternus) concerning universal jurisdiction and papal infallibility. • The Second Vatican Council and episcopal collegiality. • What the Council of Trent teaches about Tradition and the authority of the Church. • The linguistic analysis of Petros, Petra, Kepha, and Lithos in Matthew 16:18. • The Aramaic background of Jesus' words. • The significance of Simon's name change to Peter. • Matthew 18:18 and the authority to bind and loose. • Internal evidence in the New Testament regarding Peter's role. • The testimony of Protestant and Catholic authors concerning Peter's primacy. • The testimony of the Church Fathers: Origen, Augustine, John Chrysostom, Cyprian, Irenaeus, and Ambrose. • The controversy between Pope Stephen I and Cyprian of Carthage regarding episcopal authority. Throughout this study, we will present biblical texts, historical documents, and patristic quotations to examine whether the papacy, as defined by the Roman Catholic Church, has an apostolic foundation. 📖 "Test everything; hold fast to what is good."
