ESTOICISMO de EPICTETO (Enquiridión o “Manual de Vida”) - Filosofía para VIVIR con RAZÓN y VIRTUD

Epictetus, along with Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Zeno of Citium, is one of the greatest exponents of Stoicism: a philosophy based on focusing on events within our control (phroairesis), radical acceptance of events beyond our influence (Amor Fati), cognitive reinterpretation (dihairesis), and mastering desire as the primordial source of passions. This short documentary contains an exhaustive review of his Manual of Life (also known as the Enchiridion). At present, Stoicism requires no introduction; however, if anything is urgently needed, it is an in-depth look at one of its greatest exponents, whose ideas continue to generate much buzz almost two millennia later: Epictetus. Much of the Stoic's life remains a true mystery to this day. Born in Hierapolis (Turkey), he spent a good part of his youth as a slave to Epaphroditus in Rome, although how he ended up at the bottom of the Greek social pyramid is unknown. Likewise, his date of manumission is uncertain: supposedly, he was exiled along with the other resident philosophers by the Dominican Emperor around 93 AD. Following this event, he decided to move to Nicopolis, a city where he would open a school of philosophy attended by numerous Roman patricians. It should be noted that the Turk left no written work of his own; all the documents we have were written by his disciple Flavius Arrianus, who took very detailed notes of the speeches the thinker prophesied, and later carried out an exquisite work of filtering, prioritizing, and synthesizing. Nevertheless, Epictetus's fame reached considerable proportions, earning (according to Origen) more respect during his lifetime than Plato himself had enjoyed. However, does he really deserve so much prestige and honor? What aspects of his ethical system are minimally redeemable and enjoy pragmatism within the contemporary modus vivendi? Epictetus' Stoicism places conceptual and theoretical mastery in the background to focus fundamentally on the practical application of its principles. In this sense, its main objective is to transition toward a more virtuous praxis, addressing the following question: How can one equip oneself with operational tools of thought in order to reduce and endure the vicissitudes of daily life? The answer lies in his prominent Manual of Life, or Enchiridion (literally translated as dagger or knife, since this work contains valuable moral, ethical, and logical teachings that constitute a personal defense mechanism against the numerous setbacks that may occur). Like other later representatives of Stoicism, the philosopher employed countless references to the Cynic tradition through the example of Diogenes of Sinope; however, the most favored, enlightened, and rational figure of the Hellenistic cast in keeping with the thinker is Socrates, which is why he is frequently cited as the epitome of practical intelligence. Ultimately, both would form the basis of Stoicism, with such fundamental features as the demand for freedom, the rejection of material goods, and the contemplation of death as an essential part of life.
