How did Benito Mussolini take over Italy? Italian Fascism rose in a country that had just won a war, but didn't feel victorious. With politics and the economy both looking bleak, the Fascists appeared to many to be Italy's only hope. The rest, mainly Italy's Socialist Party, would be crushed underfoot by Mussolini's paramilitary Blackshirts, who in 1922 would make him Italy's leader by carrying out the March on Rome.
