It was one of the largest medieval knightly battles, in which the Teutonic Order clashed with the combined forces of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. After a day of intense fighting, the forces of the Teutonic Order were defeated, and the Grand Master of the Order, Ulrich von Jungingen, was killed. This battle marked the beginning of the decline of the Teutonic Order's power and strengthened the alliance between Poland and Lithuania.
