The term "therian" is used to describe people who claim to identify psychologically or symbolically with a non-human animal. Although the concept has existed since the 1990s in minority digital communities, its recent visibility has occurred primarily on social media. Much of the content that has made the phenomenon go viral comes from decontextualized videos, montages, or pieces generated with artificial intelligence that amplify isolated cases and project the idea of ​​a mass trend. There is no data to indicate that it is a structured or widespread social movement outside the digital environment. In parallel, the phenomenon has been incorporated into political and cultural debates as an extreme example in discussions about identity. Within this framework, some discourses have erroneously linked it to gender identities or the LGBTQ+ community, despite the fact that there is no conceptual or organizational relationship between the two.
