On August 25, 1942, a summons arrives on your kitchen table in Ribeauvillé—and overnight, you, a lifelong Frenchman, must wear the Wehrmacht uniform or face the deportation of your entire family. 130,000 Alsatians and Mosellans experienced this same forced conscription. Sent to the Eastern Front against their will, many deserted to the Soviet lines at the risk of their lives—only to find themselves, not liberated, but prisoners in camps like Tambov, where nearly one in two men did not survive. And upon their return, they were not welcomed as heroes: they were met with suspicion as "Boches" (Germans).
