Hereby they form a roof over the pleura and the upper thorax. The innervation is carried by direct branches of the cervical and brachial plexuses (C3-6). The scalene muscles have three main functions. First, they elevate the ribs and by association the thorax, making them an accessory muscle of inspiration. Second, the scalene muscles are involved in lateral flexion of the cervical spine. Last, the scalene muscles are also involved in ventral flexion - that is, bending the cervical spine towards the front of the body.
