History? A Brevet is a timed, long distance cycling event within prescribed time limits in designated but unmarked routes with control points to check off. The word Brevet refers to the certificate card carried by randonneurs which gets stamped or signed at checkpoints along the way.“brevet card,” which becomes your “proof of passage” showing that you completed the entire course. Randonneuring (rahn doe ner ing) is a type of ultracycling. A person that rides a brevet is called a randonneur (rahn doe ner, male) or a randonneuse (rahn doe nuhz, female). Randonnée is a French word, which loosely translated, means a ramble or long journey. Paris-Brest-Paris is a 1,200km self-supported ride from Paris, to Brest in Brittany, and back again. First run in 1891, it is by most descriptions the oldest cycling event still in existence today, and the pinnacle of the audax and randoneurring calendar.
