Meeting Him at a Nursing Hospital • Last February, amidst the gentle, heavy snowfall, we met Shin Sung-il at a nursing hospital in Hwasun, South Jeolla Province. He was a star among stars, a man who seemed to live in a world different from ordinary people; a superstar who appeared eternal, never aging or getting sick. Yet, he was battling illness. Shin Sung-il, who shocked everyone last June with a diagnosis of stage 3 lung cancer, was there as an ordinary person who could not escape the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death. However, it seems that a shining bee can always emit its light again. Even there, he drew the attention of other patients, and people gathered wherever he went. Shin Sung-il would occasionally gather people to tell the story of his life. He ate, laughed, and joked among the patients without hesitation, wishing them a speedy recovery. There, he was not a star, but an ordinary and humble person. • A History of Korean Cinema and a Living Legend With his white-painted appearance and intense gaze, Shin Sung-il garnered significant attention upon his screen debut in 1960 with Romance Bar*. Subsequently, he achieved box office success with every project he appeared in, such as *Barefoot Youth and *Hometown of Bees*, firmly establishing himself as the undisputed top youth star in South Korea. Enjoying a long golden age as an irreplaceable and unrivaled actor, he starred in over 500 films. However, the life of a beloved top star was not always glamorous. A thorny path awaited Shin Seong-il as he began a new life as a politician. He incurred massive debt after two electoral defeats, and after becoming a member of the National Assembly, he was implicated in corruption charges and even served time in prison. Although he held a wedding of the century with Uhm Aeng-ran, the biggest star of the time, their marital relationship was far from smooth. He openly revealed his infidelity and the turbulent nature of their marriage to the public, and the couple subsequently went their separate ways after a "divorce by mutual consent." However, when his wife, Uhm Aeng-ran, was diagnosed with breast cancer, Shin Seong-il rushed to her side to care for her. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. This time, Eom Aeng-ran showed herself as a comrade walking alongside him through life's journey, cheering on and supporting his battle with illness. • A Living Legend, Now Becoming a Legend Regarding this, the persimmon ice was Buyeosu, but they say it is the product of the Grim Reaper's life.
