■ "The 888-Day Miracle, the Gyeongbu Expressway" On July 7, 1970, the Gyeongbu Expressway, connecting Seoul and Busan, opened. Its opening ushered in a logistics revolution in Korea, transforming it from an agricultural society into an industrial one, and then further into a heavy and chemical industry one. However, at the time, Korea was a poor, periphery nation lacking technology, resources, or capital. How was the Gyeongbu Expressway completed in just two years and five months, at an unprecedentedly low cost? ■ "Finding on the Road - Park Chung-hee on the Autobahn" President Park Chung-hee, visiting West Germany in December 1964, was captivated by the sight of the Autobahn. He realized the need for a highway that could serve as the nation's main artery for economic development. However, at the time, Korea lacked the technology or the financial resources to undertake large-scale civil engineering projects. After his visit to West Germany, President Park Chung-hee, who had quietly and meticulously prepared for four years for the construction of the Gyeongbu Expressway, finally unveiled the project in 1967. What was discussed in the Blue House at the time? Along with testimony from the time, Park Chung-hee's handwritten notes and blueprints related to the Gyeongbu Expressway are revealed. ■ "Little Heroes of the Gyeongbu Expressway" On February 1, 1968, despite widespread concerns from the opposition party and the media, construction finally began on the Gyeongbu Expressway. The Gyeongbu Expressway construction site was a literal battlefield. To ensure completion within the designated deadline, the site was a constant, forced march, with workers working day and night. Many lost their lives due to the harsh construction conditions. This documentary examines the sacrifices that laid the foundation for the Gyeongbu Expressway's construction, focusing on the testimonies of those who participated in the construction. ■ "The Hidden Story of the Gyeongbu Expressway" In 1964, what words from West German Chancellor Erhard provoked President Park Chung-hee? What was exchanged between the two leaders? How did the government acquire the land needed for the Gyeongbu Expressway in such a short space of time? Why did it take four years to build the Hannam Bridge, the starting point of the Gyeongbu Expressway? The construction of the Gyeongbu Expressway proved unprofitable for Hyundai Engineering & Construction. How did President Park Chung-hee persuade Chairman Chung Ju-yung? The behind-the-scenes story surrounding the expressway's construction is revealed. ■ "Breakfast in Seoul! Lunch in Busan!" - The Gyeongbu Expressway Creates a New Culture After the opening of the expressway, a new culture emerged in Korea: the culture of daily living. The unimaginable became possible: having breakfast in Seoul and lunch in Busan. This not only brought economic benefits, but also gave birth to a new leisure culture. It also brought about the emergence of many unprecedented technologies, one of which was the express bus. Among them was Greyhound, Korea's first express bus! Greyhound drivers and bus attendants were coveted jobs. Some even had former Miss Koreas as bus attendants. We meet the bus drivers and attendants who symbolized the Gyeongbu Expressway of the 1970s. ■ "The Road to a Bigger World, the Gyeongbu Expressway" The opening of the Gyeongbu Expressway not only reduced travel time geographically but also bridged the psychological distance between people, allowing them to reach anywhere in the country at will. This broadened their horizons and allowed them to dream bigger and realize their potential. ※ This video is from [Documentary Theater - 428km of Sweat and Tears, the Gyeongbu Expressway], which aired on July 13, 2013. #GyeongbuExpressway #ParkChunghee #ChungJuyung ✔KBS Documentary | KBS Official YouTube Channel [KBS Documentary] 🔔Subscribe👍Like➡️ / @kbsdocumentary 📝Contact: [email protected] Copyright ⓒ KBS.
