Currently, more than 15 million Britons consider themselves poor—that's almost a quarter of the population! Runaway inflation and the sharp increase in energy costs in recent months have pushed millions into poverty. On the other hand, there's also wage hyper-flexibility and the growing "uberization" of hundreds of thousands of self-employed workers. Added to all this are more than 10 years of severe cuts to social welfare, initiated under David Cameron's government, and a disengagement of the state from public services. As a result, the United Kingdom, which in 2010 had only a few dozen food banks, now has more than 2,000. Life expectancy is stagnating, even declining in the most disadvantaged regions, where people die 10 years earlier than elsewhere, victims of what is known as "shit life syndrome": a deadly cocktail of multiple illnesses and addictions. We visited the working poor of England, all of them forced to rely on charity to survive. From Blackpool, a poverty-stricken coastal city in the northwest, to the verdant county of Cumbria, one of the most rural in the country, where public transport and services have become almost nonexistent, and on to Ashton-under-Lyne, an industrial town paralyzed by the lack of economic prospects. This documentary was produced by Les Films de L'Odyssée and directed by Grégoire Lamarche and Stéphane Rodriguez. It premiered in 2022.
