Luxembourg has a reputation in Europe as a luxurious oasis of prosperity. But even here, homelessness and poverty are rapidly increasing. Faced with the slow response of politicians, NGOs are trying to combat the most serious cases. A financial center, shell companies, and the European Union's court of appeal: Luxembourg is considered an oasis of prosperity in Europe. In fact, its GDP per capita is higher than that of any other country in the world. But the Grand Duchy also has another side. Alexandra Oxacelay, from the NGO "Stëmm vun der Strooss," works daily with the homeless and the impoverished. More and more people in need are coming to her soup kitchen. Here, everyone finds shelter, food, and help. Like Stephan, from Hungary, who has spent seven years, through seven winters, living in a tent. Alexandra Oxacelay also sees more and more "working poor," people who can't make ends meet despite having a job. One of them is Serge Kappel, who suffers from chronic back inflammation. He can't find an apartment he can afford, as rental prices are skyrocketing. This is due to rampant real estate speculation and a lack of social housing development, says academic Antoine Paccoud. Alexandra can provide affordable housing for at least some people. But it's just a drop in the ocean, because, in the shadow of the glass skyscrapers, more and more Luxembourgers and refugees depend on "Stëmm vun der Strooss" (People of the Strooss). The rise in poverty threatens to divide society. Yannick Wirtz is unemployed. He feels let down by politicians and calls for limits on immigration. The NGO's director, Alexandra Oxacelay, on the other hand, doesn't want to make distinctions among those in need.
