Indian Assistance Fuels Mongolia’s First Greenfield Oil Refinery

India and Mongolia continue to strengthen their strategic partnership built on shared Buddhist heritage, democratic values and people-centric development. A key pillar of this cooperation is Mongolia’s first large-scale oil refinery in Sainshand, being developed with Indian assistance and a Line of Credit support. The $1.7 billion project is expected to boost Mongolia’s energy independence by reducing reliance on imported fuel. Beyond energy, India is supporting educational and technology initiatives including the India-Mongolia Friendship School and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Centre of Excellence in ICT. These projects are creating new opportunities, strengthening infrastructure and deepening the long-standing friendship between New Delhi and Ulaanbaatar.
