Viennese Ivories - Masters of the Sturm und Drang

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Vienna became the birthplace of the piano virtuosity that would later intensify in Paris with the likes of Chopin and Liszt. For perhaps the first time in Western music history, the composer-pianist became a superstar able to earn a fortune through public concerts and rock-star like reputations. They followed the Sturm und Drang artistic trend which served as a precursor to the Romantic movement and blended traditional galant style of the mid-18th century with the more adventurous harmonic and technical figurations of the 19th. Beethoven would be the best-remembered icon of this forgotten age of music. Rondo in D Major K. 485 (1786) by W. A. Mozart - P. McNulty 6:35 Sonata in F Major, Hob. XVI:23 (1773): II. Adagio - .
