DORNBIRN (A), St. Martin, Glocke 1 & Vollgeläut (Turmaufnahme)

This is a recording of the bells of the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Dornbirn. Dornbirn, with approximately 52,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Vorarlberg. The parish church of St. Martin, also known as the "Marktkirche" (Market Church), is located in the central "Markt" district. The church was first mentioned in the 12th century. The current nave was rebuilt between 1839 and 1840 in the Neoclassical style according to the plans of district engineer Martin von Kink. From 1967 to 1969, the interior was restored and redesigned according to the plans of architect Emil Steffan. The church features a small choir organ built in 1970 by organ builder Johannes Karl of Aichstetten and a large main organ, built in 1927 by Josef Behmann of Schwarzach, which is the largest organ in all of Vorarlberg. The approximately 64-meter-high, freestanding bell tower is the oldest surviving part of the church. It dates back to a late Gothic predecessor building from 1453 and was raised to its current height in 1767. Today, the belfry houses six bells in a wooden bell frame. The five largest bells form the church's current full peal. A historic bronze bell from the Lorraine bell foundry of Hans Malin, dating from the 16th century, has survived to this day. The remaining bells were surrendered and destroyed during World War I. As replacements, four steel bells were ordered from the Böhler steel company in Kapfenberg in 1922. The peal has existed in this form ever since. A few years ago, the peal was re-intoned, and the small Böhler bell received a new clapper and a counterweight. This was primarily to improve the bell's sound so that it wouldn't stand out unpleasantly within the overall peal. The peal of bells has an extremely impressive sound, which is primarily due to the excellent sound of the Böhler bells. The large Sacred Heart bell, in particular, can be considered a masterpiece by Böhler. The sixth, smaller bell is the former death knell and was cast in 1731 by Johann Baptist Aporta in Bregenz. It rings in the key of B and is still rung by hand today.
