You want to choose a cleaning agent that doesn't bubble - bubbles cut down on ultrasonic wave penetration. Dishwasher detergent is an inexpensive alternative to special ultrasonic cleaner solutions and it's meant to work at warm temperatures - perfect for a heated ultrasonic cleaner. It's also best to not fill the tank directly with an acid, base, or rust remover solution - it will wear away at the liner of the ultrasonic tank. Instead, use 'indirect' cleaning methods where you submerge or suspend another container within the tank filled with water. Do not use thin metal or foil containers, as the ultrasonic waves will tear right through them.
