This experiment beautifully demonstrates how natural essential oils can be separated from plant materials using basic laboratory equipment. We begin by adding fresh rose petals into a round bottom flask along with 100 mL of water. The mixture is then heated to around 100°C, allowing steam to form and carry the aromatic compounds from the petals. This vapor travels through a condenser, where it cools and turns back into liquid, giving us a mixture of water and rose oil. Over time, a thin layer of oil can be observed—this is the concentrated essence of roses. This experiment is widely used in chemistry labs and in the perfume industry for extracting essential oils without damaging their natural fragrance.
