Le campane di Mazzo di Valtellina (SO)
Mazzo di Valtellina (SO) - Parish Church of Santo Stefano Protomartire The important municipality of Mazzo di Valtellina lies approximately 550 meters above sea level along the banks of the Adda River. Its name derives from the Tyrolean "de Mazia" or "von Matsch" family, originally from the valley of the same name in the Venosta Valley. They arrived in Valtellina during the 11th century and subsequently took the name "Venosta." The first mention of the Parish Church of Mazzo dates back to 824, although it likely existed as early as the 7th century. Rebuilt in the late Middle Ages, the church was partially destroyed in 1507 due to the collapse of the bell tower and rebuilt in subsequent years. In the 18th century, the building was modified by raising the walls and adding vaults. The elegant Romanesque bell tower was rebuilt in the 16th century and reroofed in 1928. Its two bell chambers house a precious set of five large bells, weighing a total of 4,338 kg, cast in 1882 by the renowned Giorgio Pruneri foundry of Grosio.
