You don't have to be a snail lover to make money from them. But without patience, planning skills and a passion for working with animals, this business will defeat you. Watch an interview with Piotr Płuska, owner of HelixPol, one of the largest snail farms in Poland. Piotr Płuska began his snail adventure when he was just 20 years old. "The idea came by accident when I was searching the internet for something that could be done in a small area," he says. "My father gave me 300 square meters of land. The rest is history." Today, the HelixPol farm covers two hectares of breeding parks, has reproductive halls measuring almost 2,000 square meters, and annual production exceeds 60 tons. Snail breeding is work that requires constant control and meticulousness. "You have to constantly monitor humidity, temperature and remember that the snail is active mainly at night," says Płuska. "Every night is a time of intense work, observation and reacting to changes in conditions. HelixPol supplies two species to the market – Muller and Maxim. Each of them has different requirements and recipients. The real challenge is to ensure quality. – We often send free samples to convince the customer of the high quality of our product – he adds. The breeding season lasts from February to September. The remaining months are the time of sales and planning. – Thanks to regular recipients, we have a stable schedule and can plan production – emphasizes Płuska. Starting the adventure with snails costs PLN 2.5-3 thousand for a starting herd for breeding on 300 sq m. The production of one ton of snails costs PLN 6-7/1 kg, sold for PLN 10-14/1 kg. The company regularly increases the scale of its operations, investing in new breeding parks and halls.
