Mieczysław Babalski has been a farmer all his life and is considered by many to be a pioneer of Polish organic farming. His farm BioBabalscy in Pokrzydów, in the province of Kujawsko-Pomorskie, was the first certified organic farm in the history of Poland. What started as a small production of organic flour and pasta has evolved into an association of over 100 local organic farms that grow raw materials for processing under the umbrella of the BioBabalscy brand. Now aged 73, Babalski has witnessed many changes in Poland's agricultural sector over the decades and is not afraid to share his views on the direction conventional farming is heading. He remains very active on his farm, fueled by a sense of mission to produce the highest quality organic food, while continuing to educate others about the profound importance of keeping our soil in good condition. The first part presents Babalski's history in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region, his views on the differences between his products and those produced by conventional agriculture, and gives an inside look into his processing plant where BioBabalscyi's food products are processed, packaged and shipped directly to customers. The second part will present Babalski's views on maintaining soil fertility without the use of artificial fertilizers or chemicals, the role of animals on his farm and a visit to his orchard and apiary.
