The Mauser family has always kept their cows in an old vaulted barn. The animals are tethered. Feeding and mucking out are done entirely by hand. But that's all changed now, because a new, state-of-the-art barn has been built on the outskirts of Mauterndorf in the Salzburg Lungau region, built to the latest standards. During the planning phase, the Mauser family placed the utmost importance on the well-being of their animals and reducing the workload for humans. This is reflected in a high degree of automation: The cows' feed is served fully automatically on a conveyor belt. A robot takes care of the milking. An automatic milk feeder satisfies the calves' hunger. A bedding system provides fresh chopped straw every day, ensuring dry lying areas. A manure removal robot keeps the walking areas clean. Outside, a manure separator produces solid manure for arable farming and thin liquid manure for the grassland. We documented the project with our camera from the planning stage to its commissioning. In this interview, farmers Maximilian and Peter Mauser discuss their motivation for building the barn, their considerations regarding the technical design, and their initial experiences since the cows moved in.
