KYOTO de petit Noh "Petite Noh in Kyoto" April 22, 2022, Venue: Kyoto Kanze Hall [Noh play "Hashi Benkei"] (Shite: Musashibo Benkei) Matsuno Hiroyuki (Tomo: Attendant) Terasawa Takumi (Kiyokata: Ushiwakamaru) Hayashi Koume (Interlude:) To be determined (Hayashikata): Sugi Shintaro (Flute) Narita Kanade (Kodomo) Kawamura Rintaro (Odomo) (Assistant): Hayashi Soichiro, Tamoi Hiromichi (Jiutai): Urata Yasuhiro, Allied: Fukano Takahiko, Hashimoto Tadaki, Hayashimoto Dai Hashi Benkei is a Noh play depicting the encounter between Ushiwakamaru (later known as Minamoto no Yoshitsune) and Benkei. The boy who appears on Gojo Bridge late at night is said to slash with the agility of a butterfly or a bird. After hearing this story from his attendant, Benkei heads to Gojo Bridge to slay the demon himself. Meanwhile, Ushiwakamaru, per his mother's orders, is returning to the temple the next day, so he waits for the moon to rise, knowing that tonight will be his last. And so the two meet. The Noh play "Hashi Benkei" is based on the famous story that takes place on Gojo Bridge. In the Noh play, it is Ushiwakamaru, not Benkei, who is assassinating people on the bridge. Ushiwakamaru is played by a child known as a "kokata." ================================================================================ The next performance in 2022 will be on Friday, October 14th at 7:00 PM. Noh play "Raiden" Shite: Jukita Sen'ei, Waki: Arimatsu Ryoichi, Interlude: Shigeyama Ippei, and more Raiden tells the story of Sugawara no Michizane's duel with his former teacher, Hosshobo, the head priest of Mount Hiei, in the Shishinden Hall.
