ASMR - Whisper-Rambling Spoiler-Free Praise for “The Blonde Dies First” by Joelle Wellington
This spoiler-free video covers the aspects about “The Blonde Dies First” by Joelle Wellington that I loved in an informal, rambling way. Imagine if I'm a friend you're letting talk on and on about a book they recently enjoyed reading. I'll talk about the book in a "spoiler-free" way, which means that I'll talk vaguely when mentioning my feelings about plot points not revealed in the blurb or marketing of the book. [That is, unless I feel like there is an important draw to the story beyond what's mentioned in the blurb/marketing. An example of this would be revealing that a character becomes disabled in the book, so the book contains disabled representation that wasn't mentioned at the beginning of the story. But if this happens close to the end of the book, I'll likely be vague about mentioning the disability representation.] — ABOUT THE BOOK “The Blonde Dies First” by Joelle Wellington is a young adult supernatural slasher horror with a queer romance subplot. Devon has a goal to make this the best summer ever before her twin sister—Drew—graduates a year early. Part of that means getting along with Drew’s classmates, even when one of them brings out a Ouija board that summons a demon. After the demon nearly kills Devon, her friend group realizes that they’re being targeted in the order of a particular slasher movie; in the movie, the blonde dies first. But what happens when Devon—the blonde—survives, and the chaotic group rallies together on a determined quest to kill the demon before any of them die? Representation notes: The main character is a Black, queer teen girl. The friend group is composed of marginalized teens, the majority of whom are Black (with the exception of a Brown teen and a white, Jewish teen). Besides the main character, two of the friends are queer. The book addresses microaggressions, racism, and gentrification. There's a sapphic queer romance subplot.
