As if the recent hurricane and strange red algae weren’t concerning enough, people are disappearing in the coastal town of Mercy. Nhung and her mother have tried continuing to shrimp and operate as usual to bury their grief for their missing family. Before the town completely erodes away, they’re tasked with finding the creature causing the disappearances. Representation notes: The main character is a Vietnamese American queer person who is a survivor of sexual assault; although they don’t specify specific labels, they like both girls and guys, and they don’t feel like a girl or a guy. The love interest in the light queer romance subplot is lesbian. There is queer representation in the side characters, including a bi guy, a trans girl, and a nonbinary scientist. As for POC representation, the cast is a mix of East Asian American characters and white characters. There are Vietnamese words and phrases.
