Handel : Passecaille (sixth movement from Suite No.7 in G minor, HWV 432)

The German composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) settled in London in 1712 and remained there for the rest of his life. He was chiefly active as a composer of operas, but he also wrote oratorios, sacred music and instrumental works. Outstanding among his keyboard compositions is the collection of eight suites that he published in 1720. It contains not only traditional French suite movements but also variation set, German fugues and Italianate concerto movements. This Passecaille (French for Passacaglia) from Suite No. 7 in G minor (HWV 432) is one of the composer's most famous and captivating keyboard works. Characterized by its haunting melody, recurring harmonic foundation, and intense, dramatic progression.
