BobBlast 367 - "Draw, Sketch and Paint - Everyday, Common Objects"
Weekly BobBlast Issue 367 Draw, Sketch and Paint Everyday Objects Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! Draw anything… everyday common objects. Draw things you see everyday - maybe not those things that you often paint! Richard Diebenkorn's drawings of things on his kitchen table: An empty glass, eyeglasses, cigarette lighter, scissors, ashtray continue to inspire me. I consider drawing and sketching very important as the first phase of painting. This week's BobBlast is my response to those students who tell me they can't even draw a stick figure! Well, heck, I can't either… and I don't want to! Instead, I draw to help me paint… establishing a confident foundation, leading me where I want to go with my paintings. The more I practice drawing things, the closer I get to making the painting I want to make. Drawing and sketching is what painters do. Some painters approach drawing like a mechanical engineer, then paint (think Mondrian). Some will sketch loosely with a large brush, then paint with color (think De Kooning). Thankfully, there's no one correct way to see things! So now, as the world is starting to open up again, this is a perfect time for all of us painters to paint as if we mean it. Your First Assignment: Draw bigger on a roll of kraft paper taped to a wall - or draw and document little things in a small sketchbook everyday. I like using Faber-Castell Artist Pitt pens, then add color with Derwent water soluble pencils. Your Second Assignment: Draw one common object everyday - a different one everyday and tack it up on a wall. After a month, you will see big advances in your painting. Drawing helps your painting. I have found the most advanced painters continue to draw and sketch with curiosity. Tony Bennett drew with a ball point pen back stage before walking out to perform. He is still painting and drawing in his mid-90s! Continue to be curious, my friends! We are Open and Ready to Welcome You!
