WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO: After watching this video, you'll have an idea of what chunking is and will be able to help students use their working memory more effectively, making it easier for them to retain new information. SUMMARY: This video was about chunking theory. Chunking theory, developed by Chase and Simon (in 1973), was a major attempt to describe the mechanisms underlying chunking. They proposed that attention is serial and that short-term memory is limited to about seven items (Miller's magic number). Short-term working memory is fast but small and can only hold a limited number of chunks of information at a time. When new input or information arrives, working memory can handle it in two ways. One way is to forget the existing chunk of information. This creates space for the new information to be stored in working memory. The other way is to use cognitive effort to move the chunk of information from working memory to long-term memory. There are several ways to chunk. You can break a larger chunk into smaller pieces, identify patterns, or group pieces. Once a chunk is created, you can practice it to transfer the knowledge to long-term memory. There, the information can be stored for years and, with regular use, can be accessed without much mental effort. Try having your students chunk when they've reached the limits of their working memory during lessons.
