WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO: After watching this video, you'll know what executive functioning entails and what it looks like in your classroom. You'll be able to align your expectations for students with brain development and know how to support your students' executive functioning. SUMMARY: Executive functioning can be described as the ability to act purposefully and organize behavior. You need this to know what to do in new, unfamiliar situations. The development of the prefrontal cortex continues into late adolescence, sometimes even as late as age 25. In students, the prefrontal cortex is still developing, meaning that the executive functions performed in the prefrontal cortex are also not fully developed. Various lists of executive functions are used in the literature. These include the three core functions: inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. Or the eight executive functions: planning and organizing, working memory, initiative, task monitoring, behavioral evaluation, inhibition, emotion regulation, and flexibility. As a teacher, you play a key role in supporting your students' executive functioning. Four concrete guidelines for this support are: create a safe classroom environment, assist with planning, establish routines, and organize the classroom. Support your students' executive functions because better developed functions lead to more adaptive and goal-oriented behavior.
