Demógrafo José Miguel Guzmán propone al presidente Abinader crear Comisión Nacional de Demografía

José Miguel Guzmán Molina, a demographer and social scientist, called on President Luis Abinader to address the Dominican Republic's population issue, warning that the country will soon experience negative fertility rates, with more deaths than births. He stated that, according to data from the National Statistics Office, the country's fertility rate is 1.9 children per woman, and that this rate will continue to decline unless offset by migration, as has occurred in other countries. He emphasized that demographic data cannot be viewed in isolation from other social, economic, and political phenomena, and that the Dominican Republic must take demographic issues seriously as part of its social policy and planning. He maintained that there is no single solution, and that many countries have failed with ineffective policies. Young people are reluctant to have children, and the reasons are not solely economic or related to gender and rights, but rather part of a broader, global phenomenon. “The Dominican Republic needs to define a policy on demographic changes, one that includes the quality of life for the elderly, what the country will do with its aging workforce, and what it will do with young people,” said José Miguel Guzmán. He explained that his proposal has no economic cost, but it requires the attention of the President of the Republic because it involves defining how to address development in a democracy. Therefore, he proposed to President Abinader the creation of a National Demographic Commission, which would address not only population issues, but also health, the economy, access to services, and the fight against poverty. Whoever leads this commission must have access to the President and the ability to convene the ministers, and he believes the Ministry of Finance and Economy is best positioned to lead this Commission.
