A Japanese Botanist Crammed 30,000 Trees and Everyone Said They'd Die — They Grew 10x Faster

A Japanese Botanist Crammed 30,000 Trees and Everyone Said They'd Die — They Grew 10x Faster For decades, conventional forestry taught that trees should be planted far apart, carefully managed, and protected from competition. Then Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki proposed the exact opposite: plant native trees as densely as possible and let them compete for survival. More than forty million trees later, his controversial method has become one of the most influential forest restoration techniques ever developed. We discover the extraordinary story of Akira Miyawaki and the science behind the Miyawaki Method, a revolutionary approach to ecological restoration, native forest regeneration, biodiversity recovery, and urban reforestation. Inspired by Japan's ancient Chinju no Mori shrine forests and the theory of Potential Natural Vegetation (PNV), Miyawaki recreated complete native forest ecosystems by planting fifty to one hundred native species together at extremely high densities. Instead of controlling nature, he accelerated ecological succession through competition, layered forest structure, soil restoration, and natural selection. The results transformed degraded industrial land, abandoned urban sites, schools, factories, coastlines, and parks across more than fifteen countries. Dense native forests established in just a few decades, improving biodiversity, soil health, urban cooling, carbon storage, storm resilience, water retention, habitat restoration, and ecosystem recovery. Today, more than 40 million trees have been planted at over 1,700 Miyawaki forest sites worldwide, making it one of the most widely recognized methods in modern reforestation. Also examine with us the scientific debate surrounding the Miyawaki Method, including forest ecology, carbon sequestration, urban forestry, assisted natural regeneration, ecological succession, biodiversity science, and the evidence behind claims of growing forests up to ten times faster. • Akira Miyawaki's discovery of Japan's ancient shrine forests as models of native ecosystems • The development of the Miyawaki Method using dense native planting and ecological competition • The global expansion of more than 40 million trees across fifteen countries—and the scientific debate that followed We explores ecological restoration, forest regeneration, biodiversity conservation, rewilding, and the hidden ecological processes rebuilding landscapes around the world.
