VASP 168: Un descenso hacia la oscuridad
On June 8, 1982, VASP Flight 168 was approaching Fortaleza at night after a stopover in Rio de Janeiro. On board the Boeing 727-200 were 128 passengers and nine crew members. The city lights were clearly visible from the cockpit, and the captain seemed convinced he could visually complete the approach. However, between the aircraft and the airport lay the Serra da Aratanha, a mountain range whose slopes remained completely hidden by darkness. Air traffic control had authorized the flight to descend only to 5,000 feet. But the Boeing continued to lose altitude as it approached the mountain at high speed. The copilot managed to warn of the presence of hills ahead, although the crew did not initiate an effective maneuver to avoid a collision. In this video, we reconstruct VASP Flight 168 from its departure from São Paulo, the stopover in Rio de Janeiro, and the final minutes of the approach to Fortaleza. We also analyzed the CENIPA findings, the descent plan, communications with air traffic control, the altitude warning system, and coordination errors within the cockpit. The accident resulted in the deaths of all 137 people on board and became the worst disaster in Brazilian commercial aviation until 2006. A recreation based on official reports, historical documentation, and testimonies related to the Serra da Aratanha tragedy. ✈️ Subscribe to discover new reconstructions of air accidents and incidents. #VASP168 #AirAccidents #Boeing727 Do you like the music on the channel?
