They have appointed princes without my knowledge. They have made idols of their own silver and gold, to their own destruction. I reject your calf, O Samaria; my anger is kindled against them; how long will the children of Israel be free from their guilt? A craftsman made it, but he is not a god; a Samarian calf will fall to pieces. When they sow the wind, they will reap the whirlwind. Grain without ears will not yield meal; even if it did, a stranger will take it. Ephraim built many altars, but they serve only for sin. I wrote them many laws of mine, but they accepted them as something foreign. They love sacrifices and gladly offer them, and they love the flesh they eat, but the Lord has no pleasure in them. Then I will remember their iniquities and punish them for their sins—let them return to Egypt!" Gospel (Matthew 9:32-38) A mute demoniac was brought to Jesus. After the demon was cast out, the mute man regained his speech, and the astonished crowds shouted, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!" But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the ruler of them." So Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity. And when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
