October 1957. A big cattle outfit in the high desert of northern Nevada. Amos Kell is seventy-one, and he has been a cowboy on other men's ranches since he was fourteen — with nothing to show for fifty-seven years of it but a worn saddle, forty dollars, and a blue roan gelding named Blue that he raised from a colt and has ridden every working day for twenty-two years.
