John Wayne Found A Fallen Soldier's Medals In A Montana Pawn Shop In 1957 — Thn He Found His Mother

November 1957. A cold gray morning in a small Montana town. Cora Brandt is sixty-eight, and she has lost everyone she ever loved — her husband to a heart attack, and her only son, Daniel, in a frozen forest in Belgium two days after Christmas, 1944, where he knocked out a machine gun and saved his squad and was killed doing it. For thirteen years his Silver Star and Purple Heart have hung on her wall. Now, three months behind on her rent and about to be put out into the winter, she does the one thing she swore she never would: she walks into a pawn shop and sells her dead son's medals for forty dollars. Three days later a tall man in a tan Stetson passes the window, sees a fallen soldier's valor medals with a price on them, and stops cold. He buys them back, tracks down the mother, and carries them home to her — and makes sure she never spends another cold morning outside a pawn shop as long as she lives. He wouldn't leave his name. Cora's son's medals hang in a Montana veterans' post to this day.
