New Bailey Prison and the Manchester Martyrs
In this video we take at look at the small remains of the New Bailey prison in Salford Manchester. Built on the Banks of the River Irwell in the 18th century it was one of Manchesters first prisons. It held some famous prisoners. Some of the arrested people from the Peterloo Massacre were held there and The a later lord Mayor of Manchester Abel Heywood was held there. We see the archaeological remains of the prison. The most famous prisoners were the Manchester Martyrs who were also hanged at the New Bailey prison. The hanging was a botched job. We shall take a look at the brief history of the Manchester Martyrs. The New Bailey prison preceded Manchester's Strangeways prison.
