What happened to Medlock Mill (Hotspur Press) ? Manchesters iconic mill since 1801
In this video we take a look at One of Manchester's iconic buildings. Know as the Hotspur press it started life as the Medlock mill. Built in 1801 it replaced an earlier mill that was built in 1794 but ironically destroyed by fire. So from 1801 Medlock mill was a spinning mill situated on the banks of the river Medlock. Later in 1901 it was taken over by the Percy brothers it became a printing press and was know and called the Hotspur press. Of many publications it printed the Hotspur comic. But where did the name 'Hotspur" come from ? Well Harry Hotspur was an old english Knight so named by the scots. After its years a s a printing press in 1996 it stood mainly empty and let to artists and local businesses. Then after standing as a derelict building for over ten years and during wrangles over its future by developers a massive fire occurred in June 2025. We take a look at the history of the Hotspur press and go inside the wreckage after the fire. This video is part of the lost Manchester series and covers the History of Manchester.
